An Introduction to Delicious Dates

Date Information

Dates are chewy, sweet and delicious. They can be enjoyed as a snack or added to a wide variety of both savory and sweet recipes, to add a touch of fruitiness and sweetness. Fruit dates make a great replacement for sugar in cooking.

Dates are good for you - they are easily broken down into sugars, giving you a fast source of energy, and they are a great source of iron. One portion gives you about 11% of your daily requirement of iron, which can help the body carry oxygen around the body. Dates also offer potassium, which can help prevent muscle cramp, and also maintain healthy blood pressure and healthy heart function.

There are different types of dates to choose from, with Medjool dates being the stickiest, sweetest, and one of the most popular options, either for snacking or for cooking.

What Can You Make with Them?

You will find that dates go very well with other fruits, making them popular in sauces, salads, compotes and desserts. Add some to meat, poultry or seafood dishes for a gorgeous richness, or try them in a grain or vegetable side dish. They also add moisture to muffins, granola bars, breads, cakes, and cookies. You can even make a tasty date paste by discarding the pits, chopping the dates into small pieces, and putting them in a glass bowl with water. Microwave for 30 seconds, then mash them into a paste.

How to Store Dates

It is best to store your dates in a tightly-sealed container in the refrigerator. You can also freeze them, or keep them in a dark, cool place for up to a year. To refresh them after extended storage, immerse them in warm water for 20 minutes and let the water absorb into them. Then pat them dry with paper towels and proceed with your recipe.
